Lost CHinatown and insights to St. Louis Chinese American history

  • Kemper Art Museum Saint Louis, MO (map)

A History Presentation to be paired with the spring exhibit, Looking Back Toward the Future: Contemporary Photography from China and Post-unification Berlin.

The Program began with a visit to the gallery to view and discuss some art pieces created by these Chinese artists who were making their commentary on the changes occurring in their city and country. The changes included the demolition of their urban environment…and History.

A group exercise then followed asking the participants to provide their thoughts and interpretation of this moment in History.

While not directly related to the theme of the Kemper exhibit, the group would then be given a presentation about local St. Louis Chinatown and Chinese History, which was also torn down and lost due to urban renewal and new visions on what should be.
